What I Am Thankful For......in the middle of January when life, weather, and the yard are so......well, you know.

**Photographs
January is my time to try and catch up our photo books. I recently came across some pictures of my grandmother, who just turned 91 years old, when she was about 6 or so. In it, she is evidently stealing the neighbors bunnies because she LOVES to play with them and feel the softness of their fur. Ahhhhh, so that's where I get that. :o)

**Company
Anyone who knows me knows I am fairly, um, well, let's see, kinda......tidy. Yes, tidy is the word. However, I love it, when on the rare occasion we have company. Schedules are different, not everything in it's place, more towels in the bathroom then I have room.....and the sweet sound of voices of those I love in my home. I really just love that.

**Elderly Women in my ward
Obviously where we live isn't by anyone who knows us, let alone any family. I love these little elderly women in my ward who I know miss their 30 something granddaughters, as I miss my grandmothers. They might not have the best sight, so they think you are beautiful. They might not have the best hearing, so they think you sing well in church. They may not walk as well as they used to, so they think you are Marion Jones if they see you out for a run. Or maybe, just maybe..........they have become what we all spend our lives trying to do better......see the best in those around them.

**Safe Places
I had a chance to work out some very tender and difficult things with someone very dear to me. It's so hard for me.....I either say it all wrong or choose not to say anything because I will say it all wrong. What a gift to be heard, not judged or cut off, just heard and listened to and loved regardless. What a beautiful way to drive a relationship I didn't think could be better, even deeper.

**The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
So many reasons this week. First and foremost for the blessings and gifts to be part of such a great organization. For the job we have....not only in this economy, but everyday. We love being part of the Church's Educational System. For the opportunities it provides......
  • We have had our papers into LDS Family Services for the past 3 1/2 years, hoping and praying that a baby was out there for us. It's been the roller coaster ride and most emotional thing I have done in a long time. Last week we decided to remove our papers as we haven't had the best luck. However, the blessing has been to realize children come to us many, many ways. To realize other options we have instead of fretting all the time. To realize how important it is to educate and inform ourselves and other people of the choice and gift of adoption.

With our new President signing a bill to use Federal funds for abortion clinics, I wonder why not give some of that to adoption promotion and education. Why not look for a reason to take a difficult situation and make it into a miraculous gift?

Some Random Favorite Things.....oh, so random

As we all do, I go through these "phases" of what is my favorite thing.......so here are the contestants during this phase.

*Cheerios
It's just lovely with half a banana sliced into it......so yummy, and pretty good for me. The problem is that I could literally eat Cheerios for every meal.

*"River Flows In You" by Yiruma
I accidentally came upon this piece of piano music and it's beautiful! It's simple, it's creative, and evokes a feeling in me that is usually accompanied by drugs before surgery. :o)

*Yogurt covered peanuts
Yes, another treat that's moderately healthy for me. They are so hard to find and I really, really, REALLY like them

*Hidden Object games
My mother has this game on her computer that is a hidden object search. It's not like any one of us has time to spend on things like this, but if I am working on a few things and need a little something different, this is very fun.

*Salsa from Puerta Vallarta
It's a place in Idaho Falls that has the BEST salsa. It's a fresh, not a cooked salsa but my mouth waters just thinking about it. Because it's fresh, it won't last as long in the refrigerator, so you have to only buy what you can eat (ahem, no problem there!).......it's embarrassing to order salsa to go and bring your own container.....especially when that "container" is a juice pitcher. Sigh.

*Frost
We have woken up 3 days in a row to a very thick fog around our area. The fun part is, when the fog is this thick through the night, we get this frosty, white fuzz on EVERYTHING. It's so very cool.

*Clementines

Essentially, seedless mandarin oranges......so yummy. I sometimes wonder why I just don't return to being a vegetarian. I really prefer things like this. :o)

What I Am Thankful For......this week!

1--Hot Water
Darren and I noticed that our hot water supply was running out after a very short time of use......the water heater. The fun part, is if something is wrong, we don't have family to run over to and beg a shower. So, after consultation with my Dad, my husband, the non-handy guy that he is took it apart, cleaned it out, replaced the heating elements, filled it back up and after 30 minutes is running and heating wonderfully! He's a genius.

2--Teaching Relief Society
In my 32 years I have had many varieties of callings......but have yet had to teach Relief Society. I shared that with the ladies in my ward, and I received a collective sound of laughter from each of them. It might be my turn. I knew this calling was coming and have grown to really love it. I love to teach anyway, but it has been a joy to teach women. During the Christmas holiday I found myself thinking, albeit briefly, how incovenient it was to have to prepare a lesson while I was trying to get everything else ready. I came to realize, quickly, that that was the gift. To pause for study, meditation, and focus on the life of our Savior. That's the gift always.

3--Grandparents
We celebrated with my Grandma Snow (my mother's mother) her 91 birthday last week. I have been richly blessed to know her, but to also know all my grandparents. I lost my first grandparent, my father's mother Beth, when I was 19 years old. What a gift and an influence for good they have had on me.

4--Sunglasses
Because I had Lasik surgery a few years ago, my eyes are a little more sensitive to sunlight. I have sunglasses EVERYWHERE. When I lose a pair, it's chaos. What handy little things they are and I am very dependant on mine.

5--My Husband
We have had a huge decision come at us this month. Neither of us was sure what course to take. I love that we come to the table with our thoughts and feelings and discuss it. But more than that, I love that there is ALWAYS a feeling of love and support and we both know that there is not a decision made without us both being onboard. If one of us feels strongly, we do it, and the other backs entirely. He's one of a kind
.....and I just love him!

Favorite Foto

I love how I captured the temple.....even in winter, the beauty of the white ground, white on the trees and white sky. I really do LOVE to see the temple....in any weather.

My Favorite Things.....about Christmas 2008

Can I do this if it's into January? Okay, let's give it a try......
We spent Christmas in Idaho Falls with my family this year. It is nice not having our families close in proximity, so you can just home base it one place.

#1--Seeing old friends
I had the chance to see a very dear and old friend while I was in IF this year. I ran by her house to see her and give her a little Christmas token, as I had been running errands when she stopped by my mother's house. We have known each other since I was about 17 or so. As I thought about it, I have known her almost longer now, than I haven't. Whenever we get together, it's a homecoming and I am grateful for her great influence and goodness in my behalf. Cecile, you are a Christmas blessing!

#2--Giving More, Giving Deeper
Every year, Darren and I help with Christmas for a family with children. As we haven't experienced that blessing in our home, it is a gift to be able to bless the lives of other children. This is my MOST favorite part of Christmas......and for me, is a close reflection of bringing gifts to another child, many many years ago.

#3--Family Council
The mere words bring a shudder within and the sound of dramatic organ music being played in the back ground. This was not our favorite experience as children, growing up. We thought it should have been named instead "What Isn't Working In Our Family" meeting. However, this year was different. My mom did a great job of getting to the point, and being clear and upbeat about it. Although some things brought up a little pain for a few of us, it still was a good time to take a look, be accountable, be kind, and then play afterwards......I am thankful for that.

#4--Fire
I LOVE LOVE LOVE fire......at girl's camp, at home, anywhere. The Lord cleansing the earth by fire, is sounding pretty good to me. Especially if it's in the winter time! :o) My parents have a fire place that they use a lot during the winter, and I just love it. It's warm, it's inviting, and I can sit there long after everyone is in bed............meditating while getting my toes warm.

#5--Growth and Healing
My sister was married over the Christmas break. As I pondered how far Amber has come in her own journey of healing and allowing, I realized how much she has grown. I haven't seen her so happy or healthy in a long time. It's odd to think that in just a couple of years, all of us will be adults. No more children in our family, with the exception of the next generation. With all our diversity, I am so impressed and touched when I see my siblings grow and embrace accountability and healing.......it's inspiring and makes me want to be better.

Merry Christmas--from Idaho!

Highlights of our 2008.....

Our Honda died, so we bought a new car, our Mazda 6. We are so grateful for it as we finally feel safe on the roads. Yes, "Declo" loosely translated means "to travel to get anywhere."

Got our new garage door installed so it's a matter of pushing a button. Lovely!

Jenn was asked by the Stake Presidency to write an article for the local newspaper on faith. Trying to make it as non-denominational as possible was a chore, but it was such a neat and fun experience for her.

Darren has been teaching in Declo into his 5th year now, so we have put in for a transfer as he wants to do his Master's work. When we will be transferred is completely open, but we have it in the works. It looks like we are thinking, Idaho Falls....something that surprised us both.

We were asked by our Stake Presidency to be one of 10 couples from our Stake to be tour guides for the Twin Falls Temple open house. It was delightful! To be part of a temple from the ground up was amazing, but to be so involved and to be able to lead tours, was simply humbling and inspiring. We were SO SO SO grateful for this opportunity.

Darren was called as the ward Mission Leader and is busy with our missionaries, both Spanish and English speaking. That has been fun as we have had them in our home often. It's quite a testimony to us that the Lord is in this work, to send out such young men and trust them with carrying the gospel to the world.

Jenn was released from the Young Women's and called to the Relief Society in the same day. Although she loves to teach always, teaching women with much more life experience than you have, can be daunting. You should really pray for the women in her ward. :o)

Jenn had surgery in July and since has felt pretty good. She is feeling very grateful for a healthy body!

As a gift from Jenn's parents, they were able to buy a new Tempurpedic, king size bed. Jenn's sleeping isn't always the best and this has helped tremendously with her overall health.

We have been able to take little mini-trips this summer and have spent time with many people we love. We have seen and felt the hand of the Lord in our lives and are especially grateful this season for good health.....with the exception of the "welcome to winter" cold that we've all had.
We are grateful to be associated with the Church Education System and the gift it has been to be involved with the lives of our youth.

We hope each of you feels the love of our Savior this Christmas season and focus on the many, many things we have to be grateful for. As His focus was and is so much a part of His continued ministry, we pray that we all might focus a little more fervently on Him. It is a season of joy and gift to be able to choose to be happy. Our love to each of you!

UnFavorite Christmas Music....

So, my sister-in-law is right on with some of the Christmas music that is out there......although I don't want to be a wet blanket at Christmastime, sometimes when they come on the radio....you just can't hit the dial soon enough.

Wham!--"Last year, I gave you my heart......the next day, you gave it away...." The Valentine theme.....not so good.

Mariah Carey--"All I want for Christmas.....is YOU!" Is she related to Uncle Sam?

The song about Christmas shoes......holy cow, holy cow, and wow.

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree--(sigh)

Anything Michael Bolton......anything..... I do feel for him, though......all that success and yet, lacking a few cough drops.

Favorite Christmas Movie

There are plenty of things I have come to like about Christmas movies.......growing up watching some of the old cartoons hold the best memories. It just wasn't Christmas until you saw Rudolph as a clay reindeer, and the Abominable Snowman, and the Grinch, and went from there to be terrorized by Santa. :o) The following are some of my favorites.....

I know the original is wonderful too, but this is my generation and the little girl in this is darling! I also just love Santa.

Although not a Christmas movie, per say, I do love the Christmas scenes, the love of God and family portrayed in this movie. I love that it is set in a time of scarcity as they had to learn the importance of gratitude and sharing.

Will Ferrell isn't my favorite.....but this show is very cute to me. I love how innocent he is in EVERYTHING. So cheerful and so upbeat about everything. When he answers the phone at "Dad's" office, a big no-no, and the best line ever "Buddy the Elf. What's your favorite color?"

A Christmas Story.......how is this a Christmas story? It's a depressing depiction of a child not sure if he'll get his Christmas wish, a school bully, a mean Santa, and a Dad with a lamp fetish. This movie does make me VERY grateful for MY family. And I'm sorry, but any child at this age, getting a pink bunny suit and having to wear it when the aunt comes to visit.....is hillarious.

Go Cougars!!!

Darren and I love to go to BYU Homecoming in Provo. It's become a fun tradition. This year, we decided to take my aunt Catherine. She's a big football and basketball fan and has never had the opportunity to go to a game. And how can you not have fun at a college level, with beautiful mountains and hot chocolate. It was supposed to snow on us but we watched the dark clouds go right around the stadium. It was very cool and so much fun!!! Darren, well it's football.....he's deep in concentration. :o)

Pictures From Halloween

So.....I promised pictures of our Halloween adventures.....and here they are. As you recall, my brother, Jake has a birthday the same day as Halloween. This year, after birthday festivities, my aunt told us to come down to her house and sit on her porch while the treat-or-treaters came......so we did. We were really nice to the little kids, but anyone over about 12 was fair game. And honestly, all we would do is move a little when they walked by and most of them nearly climbed out of their skin or over the person in front of them to get away. It was hysterical!! I haven't had so much fun on Halloween for years. My brother Zach is the upper left. The old man with the axe and the spare head. Darren is below him....the Swamp Thing with tennis shoes, I'm the white faced alien (no comments on the whiteness of the face being so close to real life) and my brother Jake is on the right......I think he's a skeletal, scary, Indian guy. Not sure there. :o) I love having brothers! And having Darren there was extra fun.

Favorite Pre-Christmas Things......this year

1--Christmas Tree
We got our tree up and ready for decoration before we left for Thanksgiving in Utah. We bought much needed new lights for our tree and got it all strung, decorated and lit when we got home. The atmosphere in our living room with that tree is amazing. I love our living room anyway.....but with all the lights off and the glow of the tree, it's breathtaking. Who knew a Charlie Brown tree could bring such a sweet feeling. We only put brass or white ornaments on our tree and only white lights, so it just shimmers! We love Christmas trees.

2--Christmas Music
Everyone says this, but each year I have more and more favorites to add to my favorites list. This year, here are some in the running:
Wintersong--Sarah McLachlan
Song for a Winter's Night--Sarah McLachlan
What Sweeter Music--Tab Choir
Angels Carol--Tab Choir
Where Are You Christmas?--Faith Hill
Carol of the Bells
Pine Cones and Holly Berries

3--Wrapping Presents
I just love preparing and wrapping gifts that we are giving. It's delightful. It's so fun to know what is inside and the thought and time put into gifts.......I just love it.

4--Colored Cellophane
I make toffee for our neighbors and friends for Christmas. I love to enclose it in colored cellophane with a big ribbon. It's so festive and pretty to look at!

5--Christmas Cards
I do not do Christmas cards.....I know, I know. We have nothing that ever changes with us and it would get depressing to have to write that year after year. However, I LOVE getting them. They go on my door and stay there as they come through the mail. I love to get pictures of those I love and/or don't get to see everyday......for the most part.

Thanksgiving....Thankful Things

1--The Very Word........Thanksgiving.....Giving thanks.....gratitude....appreciation....thank you.
I just love them all. I love that we have a holiday dedicated to a feeling, an expression, an action, a word, that we should incorporate more every day we are blessed to draw breath.

2--Power of Gratitude
I am amazed at the power gratitude can have in everything we do. The more we look for reasons to give thanks, the more abundance is showered upon us. Although times that are painful, stressful, discouraging seem to be completely opposite of feeling gratitude, they are powerful times to be driven to our knees and finding gratitude. There is always something to be grateful for and in those times, it can be the most powerful of all.

3--Mashed Potatoes
I really love mashed potatoes.....the mashed potatoes, gravy, turkey bite is my favorite. So yummy.

4--Time Together
I enjoy time to relax and talk, or play games or whatever. Not much chance of that this year as we will be at Darren's family's for Thanksgiving and it's VERY busy. Seriously, crazy. However, it will be nice to see his siblings/spouses as we do not live there anymore and don't get the chance to see them as often as we'd like.

5--Pumpkin
I adore the color, the word, and most anything that is made of pumpkin.....except pie. Isn't that odd? I just detest pumpkin pie. It has the consistency of the Mexican dessert "flan" and it's just yucky. I am working on having a better appreciation for it though. Pumpkin roll, with a cream cheese fill, now that is an entirely different story all together. So yummy, so yummy.

Something funny....

This made me chuckle and chuckle....I found this on a website that does T-shirts a friend was telling me about.
In case you can't read the bottom, it says,

"When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true.
Unless it's really a meteor hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life.
Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for.
Unless it's death by meteorite."

Favorite Photo....(one I took)

This picture is so funny to me.....I took it in my mother's backyard last summer. There is this family of sparrows in this house. The babies are getting big enough that they want to come out but aren't big enough to fly. As mom has to go get food and bring it back to them, she is frantic that someone might fall. In this picture, she's trying to stuff her baby back into the nest, while he's screaming in protest with his head sticking out. It reminds me of human children somehow......so funny.

Favorite Things......this week!

1--Sounds of kids--I am tending my nieces for a couple of weeks while their parents are traveling through Greece. Although schedules are a little crazier than I am used to with my house, I have forgotten how much I miss the sound of little people at home. Cartoons on Saturday morning, footsteps getting ready for school, giggles at something funny my cat does. Maybe it's the sounds of family, not just "couple-hood" I miss.

2--My king sized, Tempurpedic bed--Sleeping is/has always been a little bit of a drama for me. It's delightful. I have always (well for the last few years) taken a mild sleeping aid just to help get me to sleep. I haven't been able to take anything the last month and a half or so, and knowing that, my parents (unbeknown to us) helped us buy a new bed. It's really a slice of heaven on earth. Ahhhhhhhhhh!

3--People joining your family.....that you like--My sister called me 2 nights ago and told me she was engaged! It's very exciting, especially for her. Her fiancee is a very different choice than she has dated in the past. He's fun, he's kind, he's good to her....and they are very happy. It's fun.....those phases of life we pass into. Things to announce, to prepare for, new experiences.....very fun!

4--People who can say "thank you"--Yes, it's Niece Week for Jennifer and it's been a week of running and picking up and dropping off and coordinating and late nights and early mornings and and and and and and and and and....whew. I don't remember having a social life when I was 13. As I was driving my 13 year old niece home from a friend's house, we were just chatting and after a pause of what the night's events were, she leaned over and said "Thank you Ferfie." (Yes, that's my nickname.......don't ask) While she was at a friend's house, I took my younger niece, the 10 year old, to Madagascar 2 and then to her friend's house to watch a soccer game. Just before we got to the movie, she puts her little tomboy hand on mine and says, "Thank you Ferfie". What a powerful phrase.......do we say that enough?

5--Colors of Autumn--Honestly, other than water, there isn't anything more beautiful.....I adore this time of year. All my favorite colors out where I can see them. I love the trees that are kissed by early morning sun and seem to change quicker than the rest of the tree. I love those burning bushes that get more red than you'd ever think could be found in nature. We do NOT live in a broken world.....we live in such a glorious place.

Favorite Things....this week

1--Little (younger) brothers. I love being the oldest......and I haven't always felt that way, but I am realizing more and more that I have the funnest siblings. We are all in different places in our lives, we have all made different choices and we don't always agree on most things.....but I just adore them. We are all quite spread out in our ages, and yet, it has been such a delight to watch them grow into adulthood. To play and enjoy each other as adults now, has been such a gift.

2--Honesty of Children. I have a niece who took something from a store when she was on a field trip. Mind you, she's in grade school. Since, she and her mother, by my niece's request, went back to the place and paid for it. This has been a year ago. Last night, she peeks her little shampooed head out of the shower to tell me all about it. After finishing, she says, "Jenn, it just helps to be able to tell someone." I thought....you are so right. There is something in the telling, regardless of what it is. I love that she would feel safe to share......it's so cute.

3--My toothbrush. I have this toothbrush that is rechargeable from Sonicare. I love it. When it's time for bed, brushing isn't my favorite thing. I want the clean teeth, but the effort........wow. So I bought this little power toothbrush that does all that work for me. All I have to do is hold it in the right place. Sister Hinckley was right......it's a marvelous invention!

4--Voting. This year, for me, was not a clear choice as far as candidates were concerned. I felt, as I have felt in one previous election, a little heavy hearted with concern. I am grateful for a deeper understanding of this country and it's place, not only today, but where it has come from and it's place in eternity. It is always interesting to watch the unfolding, but I am grateful to be an American, to be a woman, to be God-fearing, and the gift I hold to excercise my agency through voting. It's a good thing!

5--Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. I went with 2 friends to lunch yesterday for a birthday. I don't make tons of soup at my house because with just the 2 of us we end up eating it until April. However, it was a chilly day and they had homemade soup. So I ordered a bowl and much to my delight, it had those thick and fat noodles that taste homemade. I love that! So yummmy, so yummy.

Halloween!!

So I have a brother who was born on Halloween. His birthday is always the priority with this holiday, which we love, and probably because my mother really doesn't like Halloween. This year, however, we wanted to do something with Jake......so Darren, me, Jake and my youngest brother Zach, all got dressed up and went and posed on my aunt's porch and yard while the trick-or-treaters came to her house. Most everyone that came, thought we were fake. Stuffed clothing with masks on........not so. It was really fun to completely spook them when they made it to the house, got their candy, and turned around only to find all 4 of us.......moved. One teenage girl asked my aunt if she could just stay with her instead of having to walk back down to the sidewalk. With my aunt's house, the only way to get off the porch, is to walk past us. So funny! Teenagers are so much fun! Check back, as I will be posting pictures as soon as I get them.

Favorite Artists

Walter Rane is another favorite of mine.
Some of his pieces are a little too intense for me.
He's a very dramatic artist, but I love how he depicts tender things. His work isn't always obvious or perfect, and somehow within that, it feels more honest. Don't you love how the light reflects off of the linens?

Favorite Pieces of Art

This is a favorite piece of mine. It's done by the artist Johannes Vermeer. He loved to paint women doing ordinary, everyday things. He was one of the first to use natural light, painted into his artwork. It's all very ordinary, and for some reason, I love his work. Maybe I'm Dutch at heart?
